Facebook

It's really incredible to see how Facebook has evolved over the past couple of years.

I was one of the earlier people to get on Facebook - back when you needed an email address from an officially recognized university (of which many universities weren't even accepted). They gradually opened it up until it's at the point where it is now, with it easy to create multiple aliases, and loaded up with so many junk applications that the essence of the website has been completely lost.

In addition to the many pointless and excessive applications, the family-friendly content of the site has really tanked. It seems that every other FunWall or SuperWall or AdvancedWall joke you see is either a) rude, or b) risque. And that doesn't even begin to discuss the "Daily Babe" or "Babe of the Hour" or "Hourly Babe" (same for the guys as well).

Not including, of course, the ads (although, admittedly, they seem to have heard the massive complaints and have toned those down as well).

The question now becomes whether Facebook is essentially the new "MySpace" and if it will continue to become just another massively overpopulated networking site.

This comment had nothing to do with facebook. Its just to let you know that I added you to my Google Reader so now I will probably read you more frequently and not be all confused when you mention something at a get-together that I should already know about because you talked about it on here... gasp.... need air.

What really bugs me is when I'm trying to just write on someone's wall and because of their 1000 applications, I can't find it. Bah.

As for the content on facebook, that bugs me too. Personally I think Facebook has already pretty much become the next MySpace, and in a couple years there will probably a new site everyone flocks to.

I am gonna be pretty blunt. No offense, but neither you or Elyse have ever had a myspace account so i don't know how educated an opinion you guys can make about it. I as a person with an account on both sites completely disagree with the theory that facebook is becoming the next myspace. There is a reason facebook is becoming so popular.
Facebook is much more focused on connecting with your friends and the people in your networks, etc. Every single application involves your friends. Myspace on the other hand has many services that have nothing to do with your friends such as myspace video, music and the list goes on. Another example of this is the homepage comparison. Myspaces homepage is covered with ads and things from their various services and info about people you do not even know. This is much different from facebook's homepage which consists of a newsfeed completely devoted to only YOUR friends.

Here's my opinion on facebook applications. Facebook has only become better with the addition of user-created apps. Everyone has the option to add the applications they wish, making the user be the boss and have the most fun possible from their facebook account. Elyse, if you have trouble finding peoples walls on their profiles, why do you even go to their profiles? Just hit the wall-to-wall button on the wall post and you will see your previous posts AND be able to write on their wall without even journeying to their profile. This is a feature that myspace does not have. Just one of the many ways facebook is better again.

I do agree with the comment about the ads not being very family friendly. This is very annoying. Unfortunately, this is a part of the world we live in though so I have to say i am used to it.

also, in response to the funwalls and superwalls being bad comment, it is not the applications themselves that are bad...just the people who post on them. There will be bad and obscene people everywhere you go. I myself have never had either of these applications but i understand how some people like them to share youtube vids, etc.
